Step-By-Step Skincare Routine
Top makeup artist, Kim Brown shares her AM and PM beauty routine
There’s a lot of confusion around skin care at the moment – with a plethora of products available it can be overwhelming. But once you find those magic treatments that work for your skin, the most important thing is that you use them correctly and consistently. By applying skincare in the most effective way, you’re ensuring they’re working properly and you’re not wasting money on expensive products which might be unnecessary.
Here is what my everyday skin care regime looks like, where I use my chosen products in the most practical way to ensure the best results.
Starting with the AM…
STEP 1 AM
In the morning I only do a gentle cleanse. Usually you’ve removed makeup and cleansed the night before, so a cleansing balm or oil in the shower is more than enough. I also love a which is a lovely gentle and natural way to do a morning cleanse. Some of my favourite cleansers include…
STEP 2 AM
Following cleansing, I use a toner to add a water barrier to the skin. Toner also helps to close pores and remove any residue left from cleansing. Some of my personal favourites have small amounts of essential oils such as rose, which is great for helping the serum in the next step penetrate the skin. It’s also very calming. Go for alcohol-free as it will prevent the skin feeling stripped. I use the Zarvis Pure Rose Water toner daily.
Some of my other favourites include…
STEP 3 AM
Now it’s time for serum. Serums are used to achieve a certain effect, and work well if you have a particular skin condition or concern. Considered actives, they tend to be the correctors or medicine for the skin. A serum’s thin, concentrated formula allows it to treat skin concerns in a more targeted way than other products in a daily routine.
You can find serums to treat various skin types, and some of my favourites are…
Best for brightening, treating pigmentation and bringing luminosity to dull skin.
Best for mature skin
Best for acne and redness prone skin
Best all-rounder serums
STEP 4 AM
This is when you would use an eye cream to protect the most delicate skin around your eyes. A good eye cream can help to minimise signs of ageing, including fine lines, dark circles, and the look of wrinkles.
Best for preventing fine lines
Best for sensitive skin
And when you want something for puffy eyes, try the Blepharo-Light Eye Cream from Meder Beauty.
STEP 5 AM
Then on to the moisturiser. For me, it’s important to find moisturisers that work well under makeup. I personally like those that create a dewy youthful base.
STEP 6 AM
Finally. Sun protection. This is last but certainly not least! Sun protection is really important, especially if your serum contains retinol, which although amazing, does make your skin more sun sensitive. I much prefer the more natural zinc-based products, as many sun care products contain a lot of chemicals. I’d recommend the Environ Sun Care Antioxidant Rad Sunscreen which works great under makeup. I also have the following favourites…
Now, moving onto the PM…
STEP 1 PM
In the evening I tend to cleanse in the same way unless I’m wearing mascara or eye makeup, in which case I’d use a gentle eye makeup remover before my cleansing balm. A few of my favourites below…
STEP 2 PM
Next, use your cleansing balm in the same way that you would in the morning.
STEP 3 PM
A great facialist once advised me to use face oils at night in place of a night cream. I’ve always stuck by this as oils tend to work with the skin to repair as you sleep, while creams can sometimes block your pores.
These are a few that I love.
And there you have it! I hope that simplifies things a little. Of course, there are always more things that you can add, but this routine will keep your skin looking tip top.
If you’d like to add a mask in once a week, the Hydra-Fill Deep Moisturising Mask is a great one. I would also highly recommend any of these…
