São Lourenço do Barrocal, Hotel & Monte Alentejano
In the same family for over 200 years, the estate has its heart at the monte, an ancient small farming village, which has been brought carefully back to life as a remarkable hotel of understated luxury, surrounded by ancient holm oaks, olive groves and vineyards. Here, the feeling of being at home is intimately connected with the sense of belonging to the vastness of the land. In Alentejo, farm and landscape soon become your home.

What We Loved…
The Restaurants
São Lourenço do Barrocal
Barrocal’s farm to table restaurant brings the freshest organic produce and local delicacies directly to your plate. Enjoy local cuisine, made with ingredients fresh from the estate and other familiar producers, infused with Alentejo flavours, pinched with subtle contemporary twists.
Hortelão
Fresh food on the grill under the nocturnal sky of the Alentejo.
Taste fresh vegetables on the grill, alongside our delicious certified organic veal, acorn-fed pork of the Alentejo and fish from the Alqueva lake. The restaurant Hortelão is located by the pool and the organic kitchen garden and is a great way to experience amazing farm to table Summer food. It is open for dinners only, from mid Spring till the beginning of Autumn.
Hotel Bar
In the old olive oil mill room, surrounded by the past and the present of the estate, is the cosy hotel bar. Whether sitting at the bar itself, in one of the comfortable leather club chairs, or in a table set outside with the sun setting in the horizon, every nook and cranny is worthy of a toast. Take a sip of Barrocal’s wine tradition with a glass of one of our wines or enjoy a refreshing cocktail made with the best products from Alentejo and the surrounding area.
Pool Bar
For decades it was one of the three water norias that fed the old vegetable garden of the estate, today it’s the oasis next to the pool where you can cool off and take a break from sunbathing. The pool bar is ready to shelter you from the Alentejo heat with the help of a menu of light meals and cold drinks. From the early morning to the end of the afternoon, enjoy this little corner of Barrocal that’s only available for guests, during the warmer season of the year.
Despite Alentejo’s famous hearty gastronomy, our kitchen team has designed a menu that praises the region’s eating traditions but turns them in to lighter dishes.
The Spa
The Barrocal Purifying Massage, which combines various massage techniques using stamps with herbs and fruits from the organic garden, to promote relaxation, detoxification, and revitalization of body and mind, was honestly the best I’ve ever had. I booked on the morning we were leaving, which I would thoroughly recoomend (although to bookend your trip with a massage would be heaven…).
