The Last… With Emily Attrill

Founder of homeware and lifestyle brand and store, Straw London, Emily Attrill

Emily Attrill is the founder of Straw London, a homeware and lifestyle brand and store based on Columbia Road Flower Market in London. Best known for sourcing beautiful vintage baskets from all over the world and working with UK based artisans to design and create unique items for the home & garden.

Time you danced?
I usually catch myself having a little dance most days of the week, but the last time I danced all night was at our wedding last September. Nothing beats spending an evening surrounded by your closest friends and family, dancing to your favourite music.

Thing you bought from an actual shop?
An impossibly adorable Maileg teddy bear from our neighbour Bob & Blossom on Columbia Road. We are expecting our first baby at the end of August.

Thing you brought online?
A Dôen dress from Net-A-Porter, which has quickly become my most worn item of clothing.

Person you spoke to?
My husband Hugo, we run Straw London together and I am a big believer in talking through ideas so unfortunately for him, we are pretty much constantly talking all day and night.

Podcast you listened to?
I’m not a huge podcast listener, I can never find my headphones! But I love listening to Celebrity Book Club. Steven & Lily discuss and loosely review celebrity memoirs and it is just hilarious.

New brand you discovered?
S.S. Daley knitwear. I’m especially in love with the intarsia cardigans!

Film you watched at the cinema?
I much prefer watching films at home at the moment so haven’t been to the cinema in a long time!

TV series you watched at home?
I’m counting down the days until The Bear Season 2, I loved the first season so have high hopes for this one.

Restaurant you ate at?
Café Boheme in Soho.

Takeaway you ordered?
DabbaDrop. They’re a subscription service that brings a delicious vegan curry for two every fortnight.

Book you read?
I don’t find a whole lot of time for reading at the moment but I recently rediscovered my copy of Knitty Gritty by Aneeta Patel. For anyone thinking of taking up knitting I could not recommend this more, it’s so easy to follow!

Magazine you flicked through?
World of Interiors.

Country you visited?
We recently visited the South of France, spending some time in Marseille as well as Lourmarin. This is one of our favourite places to go, not only to relax in the beautiful scenery but to source vintage pieces for Straw too.

Town you walked around?
My home town of Bridport in Dorset. Aside from being home, it is such a special town with lots of independent food and drink spots as well as a weekly vintage market which I love exploring.

Time you cried?
This morning, it’s pretty much a daily event in my life. As a typical Cancerarian I am a pretty emotional person which I’ve learnt to embrace over the years.

Time you laughed until you cried?
Last weekend while staying with some close friends, reminiscing over old outfits and nights out.

Thing you do at night before switching off the light?
At the moment, applying Cowshed Mother Balm liberally over my
ever growing stomach.

Meal you cooked?
Parmigiana with roasted rosemary potatoes and salad – I’m not a very enthusiastic or talented cook but luckily I married someone who is!

Cocktail you drank?
An Eastern Standard made with Vodka… and I’m mentally counting down the days until I can enjoy a couple more guilt-free.

Play you saw?
Shamefully I haven’t made it to the theatre for a long time now…

Thing you baked?
An attempt at my mum’s Cheese Scone recipe but I can never get close to hers – they are just the best!

Thing you burnt?
Crumpets, I never can seem to get them just right.

Time you said sorry?
Earlier today to the wonderful Anna from Renée Lapino for not keeping up with my skincare like I promised her I would.

Website you bookmarked?
An online knitting pattern for an overly ambitious jumper I have high hopes of creating.

Song you added to a playlist?
‘Don’t Worry Baby’ by Brian Wilson. After watching his heart warming documentary it is a song I pretty much constantly have in my head.

Person you kissed?
My husband, Hugo.

Travelled by bus?
A few weeks ago, hand delivering some vintage baskets to a friends studio – I got some funny looks!

Radio station you listened to?
I love listening to A Charles Paris Mystery on Radio 4 – I love Bill Nighy and it’s something I could listen to over and over again.

Time you swore?

Biscuit you ate?
I accidentally ate quite a lot of Bourbons this week.

Item of clothing you wore two days running?
Our Emily cotton dress… I selfishly named it after myself as it’s my favourite thing to wear in the summer months.

Thing you smelt?
Some beautiful fresh Peonies from Columbia Road Flower Market… I love filling the shop with fresh flowers on a Sunday!

Time you said I love you?
Earlier today whilst catching up with my mum on the phone.

Loving right now…

The Aligne Gabriella Denim Midi Dress in Ecru – The most comfortable and easy to wear denim dress I’ve found.

Dr Sam’s Flawless Daily Sunscreen SPF 50 – an old faithful that I wear everyday!

The Link of Wanderlust Hoop Earrings by Alighieri – I’m a huge fan of Alighieri and love everything they create.

The Loeffler Randall Leonie Ballet Flat. Is anyone else’s Mary Jane flat collection getting out of hand?

Straw London White Cotton Dresses – my summer wardrobe.

MarMar Copenhagen baby grows – beautiful designs in the softest of fabrics.
